Accessibility statement

Runway Bites wants every guest to be able to browse the boards, read the menu and book a date, whatever device or assistive technology they use. This page sets out the standard we work to, what we have built, what we know is not finished, and how to reach a person if something on this site gets in your way.

The standard we work to

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium. WCAG 2.1 AA is the benchmark US courts and the Department of Justice have consistently pointed to when applying the Americans with Disabilities Act to websites, so it is the target we hold this site against.

We assess this site as partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 AA. Partially conformant means most of the site meets the standard and we know of specific areas that do not yet. Those are listed below rather than left unsaid.

What this site does

• Every control can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, including the menu, the boards strip, the photo viewer and the pricing panels. Each of those closes with the Escape key and returns you to where you were.
• A visible focus outline follows keyboard navigation, and a stronger high-visibility version can be switched on in the accessibility panel.
• A skip link jumps straight to the main content.
• Photographs carry text descriptions. Decorative marks are hidden from screen readers so they are not read out as noise.
• Form fields have real labels, errors are announced rather than only shown in colour, and the confirmation after you send is announced too.
• The page respects your operating system's reduce motion setting automatically, without you having to ask twice.
• Video never carries sound, never starts if you have asked for reduced motion or paused media, and each clip has its own play and pause control.
• The layout reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 320 pixels wide and at 400% browser zoom.

The accessibility panel

The button at the bottom left of every page opens a panel of display settings: text size, text spacing, a plainer typeface, high contrast, highlighted links, reduced motion, paused video and high-visibility focus. Your choices are remembered in your browser and are not shared with anyone.

We want to be straightforward about what that panel is. It is a convenience layer, not a compliance product. Panels of this kind, sometimes sold as accessibility overlays, have been widely criticised by disabled users and accessibility practitioners, and in the United States the Federal Trade Commission has taken action over claims that such a tool makes a website compliant on its own. It does not. The work that matters is the page underneath, which is why the list above describes the site itself and not the panel.

What is not finished

• Some large headings do not respond to the panel's text size control. They are sized fluidly against the width of your window. Browser zoom does resize them correctly and is fully supported, so use zoom if you need everything larger.
• The three clips have no captions or audio description. They carry no speech and no sound at all, so nothing is lost by muting them, but they are not captioned.
• We have not completed testing with every screen reader. The site has been checked by keyboard and against the accessibility tree. Testing with JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver across browsers is not yet complete.
• Third-party pages are outside our control. Links to WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook lead to services we do not run and cannot fix.

How this site was assessed

Self assessment by the team that builds and maintains the site. Checks included keyboard only navigation, inspection of the accessibility tree, colour contrast measurement against WCAG thresholds, reflow at 320 pixels and at 400% zoom, and confirming that reduced motion and forced colours settings are honoured. No external audit has been carried out.
